Renowned Vatican Analyst Speaks During Carondelet Lecture Series

Renowned Vatican analyst and writer John L. Allen Jr. spoke to a packed house April 10 as the inaugural speaker for Fontbonne University's Carondelet Lecture Series. Allen presented, "Mega-Trends in Catholicism:  Ten Forces Turning the Catholic Church Upside Down," on Fontbonne's campus in Clayton, Mo. The event was co-sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Allen is considered the most authoritative Vatican writer in the English language, according to the London Tablet, Britain's weekly Catholic newspaper. He is the senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter, CNN's Senior Vatican analyst, a frequent commentator for other media outlets and the author of five books on the Vatican and Catholic affairs. His weekly Internet column, "All Things Catholic," is widely read as a source of insight on the global Church.

"Mr. Allen's talk was scintillating.  In both the informal session with faculty, staff, and students, and in his public address, he opened vistas on the church and challenged us to think while entertaining at the same time," said Donald Burgo, chair of Fontbonne's history, philosophy, and religion department and holder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Endowed Chair of Catholic Thought. "The response to his visit has truly been enthusiastic."
