Softball Enters NCAA Tourney

 
After winning their fifth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, the Fontbonne University softball team heads to the Illinois Wesleyan Regional round of NCAA Division III Tournament.

Fontbonne (34-5) enters the regional as the third seed, taking on #2 Anderson (29-7) on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m. Host #1 Illinois Wesleyan (37-5) takes on the #4 seed Lake Forest (26-8).

The Fontbonne University softball team defeated Greenville College 6-1 on Saturday to claim their fifth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III National Softball Tournament. The Griffins will be making their fifth straight appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.
 
Fontbonne (34-5) won three straight games beating Westminster College 5-0, Spalding University 10-2 and Greenville College 6-1 to claim the championship. Fontbonne sophomore Madi Leonard earned SLIAC Tournament MVP honors while fellow sophomores Emily Smith, Shannon Fitzpatrick and Lindsay Schaefer earned SLIAC All-Tournament Team honors. The Griffins won the SLIAC regular season conference championship posting a 17-1 conference record. In those 18 SLIAC games, Fontbonne outscored their conference opponents 190-23. Fontbonne has now won 40 of their last 41 SLIAC games dating back to 2012. Fontbonne also set a school record for longest winning streak in a season when they rattled off 20 straight victories this season. Eight Griffins were honored with SLIAC post-season accolades led by junior Cassi Glixman who earned the SLIAC Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors. Other First Team All-Conference honorees include sophomore pitchers Madi Leonard and Lindsay Schaefer, seniors Marissa Simon and Sarah Cerutti and junior Danni Glixman. Sophomore Emily Smith and junior Shannon Fitzpatrick earned SLIAC Honorable Mention All-Conference honors while senior Cara Hargate was named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Fontbonne head coach Bill Rosner was named SLIAC Coach of the Year for the third straight year.
 
Fontbonne will now move on the play Anderson College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Griffins are playing in a regional with Illinois Wesleyan University, Lake Forest College and Anderson. All games will be played at Illinois Weslyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. The times and dates of those games have yet to be released. Fontbonne needs just one win more to break the school record for most wins in a season.
