Where am I?
Professional Writing Program
You’re a good writer, meticulous worker and creative thinker. You don’t necessarily want to write books, but you can see yourself using your talents creatively, maybe in the business world or on the web. At Fontbonne University, we offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Writing, a program that blends the theoretical study of effective written communication with the practical application of writing skills in a variety of formats and contexts.
Amanda's favorite thing about Fontbonne? Her supportive teachers that provide skills for success.
Why Professional Writing with Fontbonne?
In the professional writing program at Fontbonne, you’ll develop a well-rounded understanding of the production of professional-quality written materials for the contemporary, digital age. This program will give you the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary areas of interest, such as creative writing, journalism, institutional communication, advocacy and outreach, or writing for the web. You’ll take classes in writing, literature, graphic design, art, photography, business, and marketing and communications, preparing you for a career immediately after graduation.
While you’re studying at Fontbonne, you won’t have to wait until you’re a junior or senior to get involved. Students are welcome to join the staff of the Fontbanner, the student newspaper, and Chiasma, our literary magazine. You can get involved in our blogging program or jump into the marketing or advertising clubs, promoting events and activities around campus. Professional writing majors can join the Association of Communication and English Students or Sigma Tau Delta, the national honor society that provides opportunities to compete for scholarships and participate in regional and national conferences. And our career services office can help you find internships that will beef up your resume and give you practical, real-world experience.
What Can I Do with My Degree?
With a knowledge of literary theory and a foundation in practical writing skills, you’ll have a wide range of careers from which to choose. You could become a copywriter for a marketing or advertising agency, a communications manager for a private company, a public relations professional, a nonprofit communicator, a blogger or a technical writer. You’ll have the skills to jump into nearly any field — all businesses and organizations need strong communicators, fluent in technology and social and digital media, and grounded in solid writing skills and techniques.
