Where am I?

Sr. Rita Schmitz - Fabulous Fox Theatre

Sr. Rita Schmitz, Professor of Education, shares some thoughts about volunteering at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.

Why do you volunteer at the Fox?

Volunteering at the Fox provides an opportunity to reach out in service and hospitality to the patrons. I want to be sure each one is welcomed and finds the correct seat, knows where the restrooms are, and has time to purchase snacks.  It gives everyone involved time to enjoy rich musical selections and theatre at its best.

What have you learned from your experience?

I have learned that a number of folks purchase season tickets and others come for select shows.  People look relieved when an usher can show them to their correct seats.  People are amazed at the beauty of the Fabulous Fox and are interested in its history.  I have also learned that the ushers are a wonderful group of people to work with.

How do you fit volunteering into your schedule?

The only time that works in my schedule is  the Sunday Matinee.  We arrive 1 ½ hours before the show begins.  We are given details about the show,

informed of holds, told whether inserts are needed for the programs, advised about food and beverages being in or out!  After patrons are seated ushers are free to watch the show.

What are some of the interesting shows or things you’ve seen?

I have seen a number of marvelous shows:  “Phantom of the Opera,”  “Little Women:  The Musical,” “Wicked,”  “Mama Mia,” “ Lion King,”  “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Stomp,” “Jersey Boys” and “Mary Poppins” to name only a few.  After the show with Mary Poppins flying through the air one of the youngsters came up to me and said:  “Will you please tell Mary that she was awesome?”  Watching children’s expressions is a special thrill!

Which show has been your favorite and why?

I have enjoyed so many shows, but my favorite was “Lion King”.  The artistry of that show was phenomenal.  Seeing the animals come up the steps onto the stage was incredible.  The musical was a delight.  All the characters game to life!

How long have you been a volunteer?

I started at the Fox in October of 2001.  I just received my ten-year pin in October of 2011. I can’t believe that I have already been at the Fox for 10 years.

The Director and Head Ushers are a joy to work with!

Anything else you would like others interested in volunteering to know?

Working at the Fox is a great way to meet some wonderful patrons and ushers.  Everyone has such a sense of pride. It is a real honor to be of service.

I feel part of a big family and I really enjoy the shows!
