Where am I?

Welcome Remarks

Gary Krosch, chair of the Fontbonne University Board of Trustees, introduced Ms. Kerri Morgan at both the graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It is my honor to welcome you to the spring 2013 commencement ceremony at Fontbonne University. This morning, we honor the accomplishments of the graduates here before us. Together with their families and friends, we celebrate their recent achievements and their future successes. These students have been educated in the Fontbonne tradition and continue into the next phase of their lives as strong leaders ready to serve a world in need. Our distinguished guest speaker, Kerri Morgan, embodies the very definition of a leader. Ms. Morgan lives out the values of Fontbonne University and its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, by serving the dear neighbor without distinction every day.

Ms. Morgan earned her bachelor’s degree at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Later, she earned a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis where she is now an instructor in the Department of Neurology and Program in Occupational Therapy. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in movement science also from Washington University.

In 2008, Ms. Morgan, an accomplished track and field athlete traveled to Beijing with the U.S. Paralympic team where she placed fifth in the 100- and 200-meter events. Determined to medal, Ms. Morgan continued training and made the trip to London in 2012. This time, she achieved a podium finish, receiving bronze medals in the 100- and 200-meter events. Between her Paralympic appearances — in her spare time — Ms. Morgan earned the distinction of becoming the first woman named to the U.S. Quad Rugby Team in 2009.

Today, Ms. Morgan continues her research, which focuses on disability, participation and assistive technology. She is an inspiration to her students, her colleagues, and athletes of all abilities, and she is a leader in her field and her community.

We are honored to have Ms. Kerri Morgan with us today. Please join me in giving her a warm Fontbonne welcome.
