Fontbonne University has received more than $8 million to fund graduate programs that will increase the number of professionals qualified to work with children with communication disorders or who are deaf or hard of hearing. The university’s department of communication disorders and deaf education will administer the U.S. Department of Education grants, and students interested in Fontbonne’s Deaf Education or Speech-Language Pathology master’s degree programs can apply to receive scholarships in these program areas.

NEW: Our EIDE program is now offered in-person or virtually. With the choice between on-campus learning or our newly introduced synchronous online learning opportunity, EIDE scholars will be able to connect with peers, combining classroom studies with real-world coordinated experience in the community where you live, work and play.

Interdisciplinary Preparation of Teachers of the Deaf and Speech-Language Pathologists to Provide Family-Centered Early Intervention for Young Children Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (IPEI²) (H325K200004)
- Our newest award from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) prepares 32 graduate students, majoring in Early Intervention in Deaf Education or Speech-Language Pathology to improve communication development and academic achievement for young children who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) through the use of interdisciplinary professional preparation and practice. The scholars will develop the specialized knowledge and skills to provide family-centered early intervention to children who are deaf/hard of hearing. One particular aspect of this project includes the development of a group of Parent Mentors who would build relationships with scholars, sharing their personal perspectives as recipients of the family-centered services. The Parent Mentors will provide invaluable perspective to project scholars while providing opportunities to build parent leadership and university partnerships.
Fontbonne Northeast Interdisciplinary Preparation Project: Supporting School-Aged Learners Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in Inclusive Settings (H325K190011)
- A recent grant from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) will support a project to prepare graduate students in deaf education or speech-language pathology to serve children who are deaf/hard of hearing in inclusive educational settings. The project will allow 36 scholars to earn master’s degrees in two disciplines, speech-language pathology and deaf education, by funding 28 hours of interdisciplinary coursework and field experiences focused on inclusive educational settings, speech and hearing, language and literacy, assessment and educational practices.
A $1.25 million, five-year grant from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) will support a project to prepare graduate students in deaf education or speech-language pathology to serve children who are deaf/hard of hearing and their families through early intervention. The project, Interdisciplinary Preparation of Teachers of the Deaf and Speech-Language Pathologists to Provide Early Intervention Services to Young Children Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Their Families (IPEI) (H325K170008), will allow 40 scholars to earn master’s degrees in two disciplines, speech-language pathology and deaf education, by funding 23 hours of interdisciplinary coursework and field experiences focused on family-centered early intervention, speech and hearing, language and literacy, infant and child development, assessment and intervention planning, and early childhood educational practices.
A $1.25 million, five-year grant, funded by the Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, supports Fontbonne’s Master of Arts in Deaf Education collaborative program serving students in the northeast United States. The program is offered in partnership with the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech, which has schools in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Northampton, Mass. Students who live in or near these cities can benefit from a Fontbonne education through synchronous distance learning such as video conferences, interactive webinars and broadcast lectures — all in real-time as they are delivered to local Fontbonne students.

Closed Grants for Deaf Education and Speech Language Pathology

Now closed, a $1.25 million grant [Preparing Speech-Language Pathologists for Collaborative, Inclusive Education of Two Low-Incidence Groups: Students who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Students who use Cochlear Implants (H325K120408)] helped enroll 32 students in a 29-credit hour graduate concentration within the university’s speech-language pathology master’s degree (M.S.) program. This concentration gave graduates additional expertise working with children who use augmentative alternative communication or who have cochlear implants and are attending school in a mainstream setting. The program included a mentorship component to enhance the students’ transition from graduate to first-year professional.
A $1.25 million grant, also now closed, Preparing Early Interventionists for Young Children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Their Families (H325K12061), was a 36-credit hour graduate degree (M.A.) in early intervention in deaf education that prepared 32 graduate students to work with young children who are deaf and/or hard of hearing and their families, facilitating the development of listening and spoken language. This project also offered a mentorship component for students to successfully transition into professional positions.
