When attending college, you select a degree based on your interest and passions. Your school selection revolves around whether they can effectively support your goals. When choosing a college and degree program, you are also beginning to map your career path.
Deciding what exactly you want to do with your life can be overwhelming. Here are a few steps to help you choose a degree that aligns with your passions and will also offer a prosperous career.
- RESEARCH and REFLECT – Write out your passions and goals. Write down what a dream job looks like for you. Try the personality quizzes and utilize search engines. Reflect upon the people that inspire you; What do they do for a living? WHY do they inspire you? As you explore the endless possibility of careers and identify some that resonate with you, investigate how you turn these dreams into achievable goals. Set targeted measurable goals that are relevant to your career aspirations.
- LEARNING OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM – In addition to taking college courses, what other requirements are needed to obtain your degree? For educators, an additional requirement includes student teaching or practicum. Business majors may require internships. Healthcare professionals go through residency and must pass their boards. Social workers and Counselors need licensure and or certifications. The requirements vary per field and determining the necessary steps early on will help you plan accordingly and move forward successfully.
- TAP INTO CAREER DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES – Navigating this process is not something you need to do on your own. There are many resources available to you on and off-campus. Seek guidance on navigating the professional world. There is a multitude of resources on networking, resume building, and applying for jobs. Starting your career is a journey, and it is not always a linear one. Not everyone lands their dream job right after college, and that is ok. Alternatively, some land their dream job and realize it was not what they expected. Don’t be afraid to start over or change directions if you find that your original plan no longer aligns with your interests or aspirations. Finding the right fit for who you are personally, as well as professionally, can take time. What IS important is starting that process with a good foundation. Every lesson and experience you encounter will ultimately evolve you into a dynamic job candidate and a well-rounded professional.
