What is an internship?

An internship is a practical learning experience where students can apply classroom principles in a real-world setting. When selecting an internship, particular consideration should be given to how the organization aligns with future career goals.

Some basic principles of the internship programs are:

  • Internships should balance the needs of the organization and the learning goals of the intern
  • Internships promote academic, career and/or personal development
  • Internships may be paid or unpaid and can be full-time or part-time, depending on the availability of the student
  • The duration may be anywhere from eight weeks to sixteen weeks, but typically they last the course of a semester

An internship program should provide the student with meaningful and practical experiences. Interns should be challenged by and learn from their internship principals that will contribute to their educational and career goals.

Eckelkamp College of Global Business and Professional Studies Internship Requirements

  • The internship must provide professional experience which relates to the student’s major field or area of career interest
  • Occupies at least one academic term (fall, spring or summer)
  • Requires continuous supervision by a professional within the organization
  • Minimum 150 (maximum 320) working hours in the working environment for a 3-credit hour internship
  • Students will be required to submit weekly assignments and a comprehensive report upon completion of the internship

  • Optional: Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting
