“We interviewed 15 young adults, now in their 20s and 30s, whose hearing loss was identified early on — before newborn hearing screening and cochlear implants — when their parents became concerned that they were not developing speech,” explained Madell. “The film demonstrates what is possible for children with hearing loss with the technology that is available today.”

“The Listening Project,” launched in 2018, was directed by Emmy award-winning and Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Irene Taylor Brodsky, who is the mother of a deaf son and who was born to parents who are deaf. Madell is a pediatric audiologist, speech-language pathologist and LSLS Cert AVT, and she has worked in the field for about 50 years. She served as the audiologist for most of the young people featured in the film and conducted their interviews.
